Complicated Muntin Replacement Made Easy.
Joinery repair lesson in this video! I take two damaged muntins out and replace them with some new ones. Fun little project. Did two actually, the first one took a couple of hours. Second one 45 minutes.
I want to encourage you to learn joinery. The historic house community is calling you - they need soldiers in the Artisan Army equipped to serve. I hope you use this video to that end.

Laying out the Stiles and Rails for a 12 Lite Sash
Просмотров 767Месяц назад
I take you through the math, fractions and decimals to lay out the mortises on a 12 lite sash. I use just a regular calculator. The way I do it has a few checks built into it and toward the end, those checks came in handy because I miscalculated something and it showed up in my layout. Anyway, hope you learn something from this.
Carpentry in Window Craft - Fitting a New Six Lite Bottom Sash.

Scott and I went down to Fort Myers, Florida where a client is fixing up his old house to sell. He has a LOT of rotten window sashes, most of which have been repaired once already. Carpentry in Window Craft might well be classified as the second of three major historic trade disciplines. The first is Joinery - the making of sashes, doors and other useful wooden elements. Carpentry is the art of...

Many have asked for videos to help with muntin layout. Here’s an easy one. One 3/4” mortise between a bottom rail and a meeting rail. How do you get it perfect, every time? Do it this way and eliminate as much human error as possible. If you didn’t learn fractions in school, here’s your chance. Because that’s the way we do it - fractions.
Sash Factory Overnight? Not Hardly.

It took many years of trial and error for my current version of the Sash Factory to emerge. I started with a shaper and ultimately to proved to be too much, like driving an 18 wheeler to the grocery store to get a gallon of milk. Discovering a matched window sash set, I bought a router table. With that and a router table at the end of my big table saw, I made several sashes. I have experience a...
Remove the Paint Finish AND the Glass in Under Twelve Minutes!

The team member working the sash needs to be able to strip, sand, prime and reglaze a one lite sash in under 2 hours. How is this possible? Part of the secret is to combine the Paint Shaver, ProScraper and orbital sander as part of your strategy. Admittedly, the glass is not always as easy to get out as it was in this video, but regardless, when you’re able to strip the flats in eight minutes, ...

Cutting Wavy Glass Freehand for a Diamond Lite Wood Window Sash
Просмотров 2 тыс.Год назад
I love the quiet sounds of cutting antique wavy glass. The gentle scores, the crisp snaps are somewhat hypnotic. I cut freehand, rarely using a straight edge or even a marker, and teach my students to do the same. “Trust Thyself” and develop the skills. It’s ok to use a straight edge or a marked line, or both. That’s part of mastering the movement. But eventually one must let go of the training...

I have a bowed meeting rail I’m working with now. I’ve been wrapping it in a moist towel and clamping it straight. Seems like it’s working. Over the length of 31 inches it was bowed out 1/4 inch a week ago. Now it’s down to less than 1/8 inch. Not being very aggressive with the clamps for fear of breaking it.

How many hours does a repair like that take you? And do you charge for your time or a price? Over in the UK, love your videos and have learnt a lot

    • @WoodWindowMakeover
      @WoodWindowMakeover 10 дней назад

Thank you 🙏. No I get a set price to restore a sash. Granted, the price increases with every muntin. But it’s a fixed price. After a while there’s only so many things that can go wrong with a sash and you learn to compare the cost of restoring to building one from scratch. If it’s too far gone and it costs more to restore it than make a new one, they most often get a new, authentic replica, true to form. This one took me a couple of hours. The second one only took 45 minutes. But that is the way it is. First one always takes longer. Second one is faster, third faster and so forth.

Stop talking down to your viewers. In your manner of speaking AND your camera angles. Who is your intended audience? Someone who has no clue whatsoever about any of this, or a somewhat experienced tradesman or homeowner DIYer? Either way, you’re glazing over a lot of important details if you’re trying to teach someone who doesn’t already know how to do this shit. And yeah, pun intended. You’re obviously great at what you do. Those windows look fantastic. But you’d be better with the audience if you didn’t sound like you’re annoyed that they don’t already know everything you do, and so you’re rushing through the explanation.

Your info is great in all vids and I plan to use all of it to restore every window in my house. One constructive criticism though about something I see in numerous homr improvement videos. There is an excessive use of the word "okay?" In the same way teenagers use the word "like". Its a habitual filler word and distracts from what you are trying to say, which is a real shame considering how knowledgeable you seem and how valuable your content is to folks like me. Thanks for the vid!
